Among the gently swaying Spanish moss, beneath the arching flyover formation of sandhill cranes, atop a meadow of oak, palm, and the fire-loving lopsided Indian grass, a circle of strings has formed. Celebrants of the intergenerational Gainesville Old Time Music community gather in a formation of their own to cast resonant instrumental incantations of reverence and camaraderie across one of North America’s highest functioning conservation burial cemeteries. Fiddles, guitars, banjos, singers, dancers, and the fruits of deep-rooted community unite once each season to celebrate our beloved Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery. The vibration of string, wood, and spirit emanates across our wooded sanctuary. This is Strings in the Cemetery. Once every few months, members of the Gainesville Old Time Community will gather at PCCC to perform some of our favorite tunes from the rich catalogue of traditional music, for the enjoyment of all.
