Real-Time Performance Issues on the KYMA Brian Belet (California)
Abstract: The Kyma.5 digital synthesis system (Kyma.5 software plus Capybara-320 DSP hardware, released by Symbolic Sound Corporation in 2000) permits genuine real-time performance capabilities for computer music. The term "real time" has been used for many years in this field, but earlier systems by many developers and manufacturers did not truly accomplish this goal. The Kyma.5 system does indeed reach this long sought goal, and as a software synthesis system it is unique. This presentation outlines real-time issues developed by the author within Kyma.5 in seven overlapping categories:
1. Sound structures composed before performance time;
2. Sound structures composed during performance time;
3. Kyma.5 Sounds controlled by external live instrument during performance;
4. Live instrument Sounds modified by Kyma.5 during performance;
5. Performer control of Kyma.5 performance clock time;
6. Algorithmic Sound structures;
7. Multi-channel spatialization.

Abstract: This paper examines some of the many ways that electroacoustic techniques can be modeled using acoustic means. Electroacoustic methods modeled are briefly explained followed by an overview and demonstration of acoustic methods for replicating these techniques.
