They play a distinctive style of stoner/ sludge metal that they categorize as ''stoner pop''. The group was formed in 2004 by Steve Brooks (ex-Floor), Juan Montoya (ex-Cavity, ex-Ed Matus' Struggle), Jonathan Nuñez and Rick Smith (who also play in the grindcore band Shitstorm). According to MTracks.com: "Their music has a unique, hard-hitting sound that provokes a wide range of emotions, and they have a large fan base throughout the world." They have toured with Mogwai, Isis, Pelican, Black Cobra, Baroness, Jesu, The Sword, Stinking Lizaveta, Harvey Milk and Boris. Steve Brooks, however, has said that they don't consider themselves a metal band. In describing the band's sound, Smith said in an interview: "To me it's mostly a combination of everything we listen to collectively as a band. We take what we like from what we grew up on and use it as creatively as we can. I think the meshing of different sounds comes naturally just because we all have different musical backgrounds yet have a ton of common interests." In terms of touring, Brooks said Torche is getting more of a young crowd. On April 8, 2008, the band released their second full-length, entitled Meanderthal. It was produced by Kurt Ballou (Converge, Genghis Tron). It was met with critical acclaim, including that from Decibel Magazine who ranked Meanderthal #1 on their list of the Top 40 Extreme Albums of 2008 as well as an 8.2/10 by Pitchfork Media. In an interview, Brooks said the band themselves came up with the album's concept in terms of artwork and packaging. Brooks has also said that in terms of writing material, the band focuses on what they like, rather than worrying about a "backlash" from their fans. In late 2008 Juan Montoya left the band, a move credited to musical differences. Steve Brooks said "He is an amazing guitarist, but we are just not on the same page... but Torche will still carry on as a 3 piece band". Torche has fulfilled this statement by embarking on several tours, including one with the band dredg and another with a reunited Harvey Milk. In 2010 the band started touring with a temporary second guitar player, Max Johnston of the Downhome Southernaires before finding a permanent replacement in Riddle Of Steel and Tilts guitarist and frontman Andrew Elstner. The band is now a 4 piece once again. Current lineup: Steve Brooks - guitar, vocals; Jonathan Nuñez - bass guitar; Rick Smith - drums; Andrew Elstner - guitar, vocals. Former members: Juan Montoya - guitars. http://www.torchemusic.com55:T4425,{"name":"Torche","id":912768,"resource_url":"https://api.discogs.com/artists/912768","uri":"https://www.discogs.com/artist/912768-Torche","releases_url":"https://api.discogs.com/artists/912768/releases","images":[{"type":"primary","uri":"https://i.discogs.com/NCVibpGQk7CS91g-NpvPdU7-XtMnzPxqZxzKfiHTKUQ/rs:fit/g:sm/q:90/h:600/w:600/czM6Ly9kaXNjb2dz/LWRhdGFiYXNlLWlt/YWdlcy9BLTkxMjc2/OC0xNTA4ODE4MzIw/LTY2NjkuanBlZw.jpeg","resource_url":"https://i.discogs.com/NCVibpGQk7CS91g-NpvPdU7-XtMnzPxqZxzKfiHTKUQ/rs:fit/g:sm/q:90/h:600/w:600/czM6Ly9kaXNjb2dz/LWRhdGFiYXNlLWlt/YWdlcy9BLTkxMjc2/OC0xNTA4ODE4MzIw/LTY2NjkuanBlZw.jpeg","uri150":"https://i.discogs.com/XJ6z4xpBii_Hlgxs5rAVZg3vGQHybHQwir1BJyU4oeg/rs:fit/g:sm/q:40/h:150/w:150/czM6Ly9kaXNjb2dz/LWRhdGFiYXNlLWlt/YWdlcy9BLTkxMjc2/OC0xNTA4ODE4MzIw/LTY2NjkuanBlZw.jpeg","width":600,"height":600},{"type":"secondary","uri":"https://i.discogs.com/5vPFf1giheW7k2sXlQ4yL1j3D81J_Mguj9IUqEEL99U/rs:fit/g:sm/q:90/h:401/w:600/czM6Ly9kaXNjb2dz/LWRhdGFiYXNlLWlt/YWdlcy9BLTkxMjc2/OC0xMzU4MjcxNjcx/LTQ2MTEuanBlZw.jpeg","resource_url":"https://i.discogs.com/5vPFf1giheW7k2sXlQ4yL1j3D81J_Mguj9IUqEEL99U/rs:fit/g:sm/q:90/h:401/w:600/czM6Ly9kaXNjb2dz/LWRhdGFiYXNlLWlt/YWdlcy9BLTkxMjc2/OC0xMzU4MjcxNjcx/LTQ2MTEuanBlZw.jpeg","uri150":"https://i.discogs.com/IKqYua57dD4yHtEEkGNLJuHAIkI_WcFxzi_OVb43s3c/rs:fit/g:sm/q:40/h:150/w:150/czM6Ly9kaXNjb2dz/LWRhdGFiYXNlLWlt/YWdlcy9BLTkxMjc2/OC0xMzU4MjcxNjcx/LTQ2MTEuanBlZw.jpeg","width":600,"height":401},{"type":"secondary","uri":"https://i.discogs.com/2pEpwLvHQpuTMlD8wPxSLNyl3JBd9yhGksa4Tqe2BWM/rs:fit/g:sm/q:90/h:306/w:292/czM6Ly9kaXNjb2dz/LWRhdGFiYXNlLWlt/YWdlcy9BLTkxMjc2/OC0xMTkzMDU1NDYw/LmpwZWc.jpeg","resource_url":"https://i.discogs.com/2pEpwLvHQpuTMlD8wPxSLNyl3JBd9yhGksa4Tqe2BWM/rs:fit/g:sm/q:90/h:306/w:292/czM6Ly9kaXNjb2dz/LWRhdGFiYXNlLWlt/YWdlcy9BLTkxMjc2/OC0xMTkzMDU1NDYw/LmpwZWc.jpeg","uri150":"https://i.discogs.com/6tfIsNwWlDBJb-AxVNHppqz4Au7vx3koascrbVs_qAk/rs:fit/g:sm/q:40/h:150/w:150/czM6Ly9kaXNjb2dz/LWRhdGFiYXNlLWlt/YWdlcy9BLTkxMjc2/OC0xMTkzMDU1NDYw/LmpwZWc.jpeg","width":292,"height":306}],"profile":"Torche was an American stoner rock/doom metal band from Miami, Florida, formed in 2004 by Steve Brooks after the breakup of his previous band [a=Floor (2)].\r\n\r\nThe first lineup consisted of Steve Brooks, Juan Montoya, Jonathan Nuñez and Rick Smith.\r\nIn late 2008 Montoya left the band, a move credited to musical differences. The group formed in 2004 and has released five full-length studio albums, four EPs, two split albums, and three singles. They released their fifth and final full-length studio album, Admission, in 2019.\n\nHistory\n\nThe group was formed in 2004 by Steve Brooks (ex-Floor), Juan Montoya (ex-Floor, ex-Cavity, ex-Ed Matus Struggle), Jonathan Nuñez and Rick Smith (who also played in the grindcore bands Shitstorm, Tyranny of Shaw, Adore Miridia, the screamo band Tunes for Bears to Dance To, and punk band Post-Teens). They have toured with Mogwai, Isis, Pelican, Clutch, Black Cobra, Baroness, Jesu, The Sword, Coheed and Cambria, Stinking Lizaveta, Harvey Milk, Boris, and High on Fire. Steve Brooks, however, has said that they do not consider themselves a metal band. In describing the band's sound, Smith said in an interview: \"To me it's mostly a combination of everything we listen to collectively as a band. We take what we like from what we grew up on and use it as creatively as we can. I think the meshing of different sounds comes naturally just because we all have different musical backgrounds yet have a ton of common interests.\" In terms of touring, Brooks said Torche is getting more of a young crowd.\n\nOn April 8, 2008, the band released their second full-length, entitled Meanderthal. It was produced by Kurt Ballou (Converge, Genghis Tron). It was met with critical acclaim from publications including Decibel magazine, who ranked Meanderthal No. 1 on their list of the Top 40 Extreme Albums of 2008, and Pitchfork, who gave the album an 8.2/10 score in their review. In an interview, Brooks said the band themselves came up with the album's concept in terms of artwork and packaging, along with Aaron Turner. Brooks has also said that in terms of writing material, the band focuses on what they like, rather than worrying about a \"backlash\" from their fans.\n\nSinger/guitarist Stephen Brooks is one of the few openly gay musicians in the metal scene. He did an interview round table in 2008 on thestranger.com with other openly gay musicians such as Brian Cook (Russian Circles, Sumac, These Arms Are Snakes, Botch), and Juan Velazquez of Abe Vigoda.\n\nIn late 2008, Juan Montoya left the band, a move credited to musical differences. Steve Brooks said, \"He is an amazing guitarist, but we are just not on the same page... but Torche will still carry on as a 3 piece band\". As of 2010, Juan Montoya joined up with ex-Bloodsimple members Bevan Davies and Kyle Sanders, and Charlie Suarez of Sunday Driver to create the band \"MonstrO\" In an interview with Malia James, Brooks revealed that Montoya's departure was acrimonious, and involved physical violence between the two of them.\n\nTorche embarked on tours with bands such as dredg in April 2009,[17] and another with a reunited Harvey Milk. The band opened for Coheed and Cambria on their headlining tour alongside Circa Survive in spring 2010. One of Torche's earliest festival performances was at Incubate in 2006. After that, the band played at SXSW in 2008.\n\nIn January 2011, it was announced on the Riverfront Times blog that Andrew Elstner (Riddle of Steel, Tilts) would be joining Torche. The band released their fourth full-length, Restarter, in February 2015 on Relapse Records.\n\nTorche announced their fifth full-length record, Admission, on May 19, 2019, with the release of the song \"Slide\". The album was released on Relapse Records July 12, 2019.\n\nIn May 2022, founding frontman Steve Brooks announced the upcoming tour supporting Meshuggah would be his last with the band, stating \"We're a few months away from the last tour I'm doing with Torche,\" he writes. \"We've been so very lucky and went far beyond what I imagined. I just don't have it in me to keep this going living on opposite sides of the country. Much love to my band members and everyone that supported us these 18 years! See y'all this Sept/Oct.\"\n\nOn September, 17, 2022, it was later confirmed in previous comments from a post on Brooks's personal Instagram that the band will not continue without him after their current tour ends. Torche played their final concert on October 16, 2022, opening for Meshuggah and In Flames at the Tabernacle in Atlanta, Georgia.\n\nLast lineup:\n\nSteve Brooks - guitar, vocals;\nJonathan Nuñez - bass guitar;\nRick Smith - drums;\nAndrew Elstner - guitar, vocals.\n\nFormer members:\n\nJuan Montoya - guitars.\n\nhttp://www.torchemusic.com Read more on Last.fm. The band has since undergone line up changes; the remaining original members are Phillip Cope and Laura Pleasants. In 2006, the band added two drummers (Carl McGinley of Unpersons, from Savannah, and Jeff Porter). Eric Hernandez (of Capsule, from Miami) joined in 2008 to replace Porter. The dual drum tracks are often panned strongly to the right and left.\n\nOn April 28, 2016, the band announced in Facebook post that they would be going on an indefinite hiatus, stating, \"We have collectively decided to take a hiatus with no set date to reconvene.\n\nKylesa is a metal group that borrows elements of hardcore punk, psychedelic rock, stoner rock, sludge metal, and speed metal. They have two singers, Phillip and Laura. Kylesa formed in Savannah in 2001, taking their name from \"kilesa mara\", a Buddhist term denoting delusory mental states.\n\nGuitarist and singer Phillip Cope, bassist Brian Duke and drummer Christian Depken were former members of the Savannah sludge metal act Damad, which had released two albums in the '90s. Philip Cope has been described as the Savannah \"metal scene's godfather.\" He began playing in hardcore punk groups in the late 1980s, and in 1992 booked groups such as Buzzoven and Neurosis at a local all-ages club. From 1993 to 2001, Cope played in the group Damad. Pat Mathis of the Passive Fist label said that Damad \"established a sound that's stuck-- that whole heavy, doomy Southern kind of metal. When you've got these old punk guys who listen to the Allman Brothers and start a metal band, that's kind of what you get.\" Damad changed their name to Kylesa in 2001 with the addition of Laura Pleasants, a native of North Carolina who attended the Savannah College of Art and Design.\n\nAfter recording the majority of their first record (S/T on Prank) in May 2001, Kylesa played their first show with Mastodon and Cream Abdul Babar in Savannah, Georgia on June 2, 2001. On June 6, 2001, Brian Duke died from an epileptic seizure during the course of the night. The band decided to finish the recording in Brian's honor, wrote and recorded two more songs (where local bass player and friend Michael Redmond stepped in and played bass). The self-titled record was released about one year later on Prank Records when artwork by Pushead was completed. Prior to the full LP, a single limited 7\" was released on Prank also with Pushead art. The Pushead-designed Band Logo from these releases has been used on all the band's merchandise and releases ever since.\n\nReplacing Duke with bassist and singer Corey Barhorst, the band wrote and recorded a split 7\" with Memento Mori, on Hyperrealist, and a split full length with Cream Abdul Babar from Florida, on At A Loss Recordings. These records came out immediately following the release on Prank, although they were recorded much later, The long wait for artwork by Pushead delaying the release of the S/T LP. More singles and a placeholder EP, 2004's No Ending 110 Degree Heat Index followed right before Depken left the group.\n\nKylesa signed with the independent metal label Prosthetic Records and released their second proper album, To Walk a Middle Course, in 2005 with drummer Brandon Baltzley.\n\nFollowing the release of that album, Baltzley left the group, replaced by a pair of drummers, Jeff Porter and Carl McGinley. Kylesa's third album, Time Will Fuse Its Worth, was released on Halloween 2006. Eric Hernandez replaced Porter and appears on Static Tensions, released in 2009. Two songs on this album were inspired by the shooting of Jason Statts, a Savannah musician. They toured with Mastodon after the release of this album, whose guitarist, Bill Kelliher, said that “ We took Kylesa on tour because we love those guys and have been hanging out with them for years. They blew a lot of people's expectations out of the water.”\n\nJournalist David Peisner of Spin described them as \"dark psych-metal titans,\" practicing an \"aggressive [sound], but with a hazy, stoner vibe that suggests a strange amalgamation of Black Sabbath, Black Flag, and early Pink Floyd.\" As of 2010, they have sold 75,000 albums. In 2010 they signed to the Season of Mist records label to release the album Spiral Shadow on October 26 that year. A rarities compilation album titled From the Vaults, Vol. 1 was released later that year.\n\nTheir sixth album, Ultraviolet, was released through Season of Mist in May 2013. The record is said to be darker lyrically and sonically than previous works, containing more vocals from singer/guitarist Laura Pleasants. The band embarked on a full North America headlining tour to promote the release with direct support from Blood Ceremony, White Hills and Lazer Wulf. In October 2015, the group released their seventh album Exhausting Fire through Season of Mist.\n\nIn August 2024, the band announced they had returned from their hiatus and announced they would perform at the 2025 Roadburn Festival. Pitchfork has described the band's sound as \"rock music that folds in... more metal leanings, along with something more delicate and spare\".\n\nIn 2009, the Blue Record was released by Relapse Records. With this release, they continued to push the envelope and development as their style progresses. This progression ultimately gave them the Album of the Year award from Decibel Magazine and gave them numerous Best of lists from Pitchfork, Village Voice, Popmatters, Revolver, Rock Sound, and Metal Hammer.\n\nBaroness hadn't toured for the entire year in 2011 to focus on creating a new, both in the sense of music and in the literal meaning, album. Yellow-Green was recorded with producer John Congleton in Hoboken, NJ and Dallas, TX. The new album was released on July 17th, followed by extensive touring.\n\nOn May 23, 2011, the band launched their official website. The first content released on the new page gave hints to work on a new album being produced again by John Congleton. On May 14, 2012, the single \"Take My Bones Away\" from the new album was released over YouTube, along with an album teaser.\n\nBaroness released Yellow & Green on July 17, 2012 through Relapse.\n\nOn August 28, 2015 towards the end of a two-week tour in Europe they released the song \"Chlorine & Wine\" and announced that their new album Purple would be released December 18, 2015 on their own newly formed label Abraxan Hymns.\n\nPurple was recorded with Dave Fridmann at Tarbox Road Studios in Cassadaga, New York.\n\nOn September 24, 2015, Baroness released the official music video for \"Chlorine & Wine\" and announced a North American small venue tour for the fall of 2015.\n\nOn November 15, 2015, the band released the first official single \"Shock Me\" from the forthcoming album Purple, which debuted on BBC Radio 1's Rock Show with Daniel P. Carter.\n\nPurple's track \"Shock Me\" was nominated for Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance at the 2017 Grammy Awards. \n\nGina Gleason joins Baroness in June of 2018 after Peter Adams departure.\n\nIn 2019 and 2023 Baroness released their fifth and sixth albums, \"Gold & Grey\" and \"STONE.\" \n\nBaroness is: \n Sebastian Thomson - drums\n Nick Jost – bass\n John Baizley – guitars, vocals\n Gina Gleason – guitars\n\nDiscography\n2004 First \t\t\t\t\t (Hyperrealist Records) \n2005 Second \t\t\t\t\t (Hyperrealist Records)\n2007 A Grey Sigh in a Flower Husk (At a Loss Recordings)\n(aka: Third), split CD with Unpersons \n2007 Red Album \t\t\t\t (Relapse Records) \n2009 Blue Record \t\t\t\t (Relapse Records)\n2012 Yellow & Green (Relapse Records)\n2015 Purple (Abraxan Hymns)\n2019 Gold & Grey (Abraxan Hymns)\n2023 STONE Read more on Last.fm.
