ACT UP (the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) came together in 1987 to fight the US government's lack of action despite ever growing numbers of HIV-related deaths. The grassroots collective fundamentally transformed the world's consciousness about HIV/AIDS and centered activism in the 1980s and 90s LBGTQ political imagination through direct action.
