Those who survived returned to a country that was still in denial of the horrors of fascism, whose government labelled them "premature anti-fascists" and hounded many of them with political persecution for the rest of their lives. Nonetheless, they persisted in labor, civil rights, human rights, environmental, and other modes of activism.
