As repression intensifies in South Africa, it is critical that we maintain the growing momentum against U.S. investment in that country through coordinated action this Fall.
Over 100 campuses participated in protest actions for divestment this spring with close to 3,500 students being arrested. At the same time thousands of community activists were arrested in the South African embassy and consulates throughout the year.
This Spring's protests have underscored the power of direct actions like blockades and sit-ins, and we encourage student and community groups to engage in similar actions during the local week on October 11. The largest unified effort by action will increase the political impact and publicity for our actions.
Since October 11 coincides with South African Political Prisoner Day, groups should try to link divestment actions with campaigns to free Nelson Mandela and other political prisoners.
This fall it is vital to strengthen ties with the movement against U.S. intervention in Central America, and we invite organizations of the Central America solidarity network to launch actions on October 11 in their area. We must provide political and other backing for their actions in the Fall.
This National Protest Day was initiated on May 7 by the American Committee on Africa and the most active campus anti-apartheid groups from: Berkeley, Columbia, Iowa, Texas, Florida, Yale, Princeton, Wisconsin, SUNY/Purchase, Colorado, Vassar, Cornell, Louisville, Rutgers, Pennsylvania, Santa Cruz, the USSA, DSA, Progressive Student Network, and the Black Student Communications Organizing Network.
